Our yard on moving day

I wanted to share with you the way our yard looked when we moved into our house almost 2 years ago. As you can see, the weeds were few and far between with no grass or lanscaping to be seen.

This is a picture of Cheesehead walking in front of our house. If you look closely you can see large chunks of concrete and other rocks scattered throughout.

This is our front yard. Do you see all of the pine needles in the yard? You should have seen that pile after I raked.

I hate the fact that our driveway is gravel. I sure wish I would have been able to use my tax return money to put in a blacktop driveway instead of having to pay off bills with it. I guess a person really needs to select priorities though....

Our home as it appears from the road. There really isn't a whole lot of in-between growth in there. The low growth is thorny berryless bushes and ferns.

This is the left side yard. We have placed the kids' swingset here. That will be part of a different post.

Thank you for stopping by. Please leave me a message and a backlink. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Cindy

Cindy, it's a blank slate just waiting for roses and other stuff. :-). But, you said it was two years ago. Are there other posts which show the yard now? I can't remember.~~Dee

I know you will find this odd .. but I love the sound of gravel when you walk on it .. plus there is a safety factor of hearing some one when they are on your property.
We need a new deck .. so that is on the "when I win the lottery" list ! You aren't alone ! LOL
Joy
PS .. love the fact you don't have neighbors breathing down your neck !

You get to pick and choose what you want to be planted, my parents built a home in the early 70's and we went through the same process. It's so amazing to drive by and see what's there now, basically forever and to remember what it was at one time. It's all awesome!

Thanks for sharing :).

Dee- I have done some work, but not as much as I normally would have. That's a LONG story for another post! I have done some work though which I will be posting as I work on my garden makeover posts. I'm not sure why I didn't kick off the series with this post. Oh well.

Nancy- Glad you stopped by. I'm looking forward to making it mine!

Joy- I like the sound of the gravel underfoot too. It's the pieces of rock jamming up the snowblower, the constant supply of sand on my kitchen floor, and the refusal of snow to melt off my driveway even when I shovel it down to the ground that I hate!

Kathi- It IS a lot of fun seeing where you started and comparing it to where you are now. I can't wait to take it to the next level.

I like the way your home is surrounded by trees. How large is the property? Close neighbors? Looks like it's waiting to be transformed into whatever you can envision...a gardener's dream!

We used gravel in some of our paths, as well as one small parking area, and like it, except that it needs to be renewed once in awhile if we've had a lot of rain. What hardscape material works best for your area...decking, concrete or ?

cinj,

I'm with joy...I would love a gravel drive but being on a slope, not a good idea. I think it looks wonderful in a natural setting like you have, but since we don't get snow...that tips the scale?

I see woodland gardens with rhododendrons and hardy azaleas with all the pine needles. Is the soil acid?

Can't wait to see what you do!

Lin- We're on a little over 2 acres. It's in a new development so we really don't have very many neighbors yet. This may sound a bit selfish of me, but I hope it stays that way. Not that I don't like people, I just like the peace and quite and all of the nature out here.

I guess I'm not entirely sure, our concrete seems to be doing well so far as does our wooden stairs. We're awfully sandy around here, so we need to make sure everything is done right.

Gail- Yes. The soil is very acidic so I know I'll have to be careful in either what I pick or how I take care of it. It's fun planning all this stuff out!

We have a variety of hardscape materials; colored/stamped concrete, flagstone, gravel and composite decking. If a deck is in your future, I recommend using a composite rather than wood. We replaced a redwood deck with a composite material called "Veranda" and are really happy with it. Almost no maintenance and it looks great.

Fuuny you should mention composite decking, we actually HAVE been thinking about a deck. I'm sure that project is at least a couple of years away though.... SO many projects, so little time (AND money!).

What a great spot nestled in all those lovely trees!

Amy- Thanks. I like it very much. Weird I don't see a little more wildlife, but they certainly leave evidence of being here.
