Exciting discoveries in my yard

I thought I had the day off today, so I got out in the garden and started to work. I am so happy to see so much growth going on! There are only a couple of them that aren't showing any signs of progress. I picked some that have shown the most energy. Just a few days ago everything looked dead and I thought that spring would never get here. Now look what I discovered!

I planted a rose last year. I wasn't optomistic about it's successful growth since I seem to kill so many, but there are signs of growth on it. Did I finally defeat the brown thumb syndrome?

I even found a bird's nest. I didn't notice it last year, but I haven't seen any birds hanging around it this year. I was in a bit of a funk last year, so it's entirely possible that I just missed it. The birds are sure chirping now.

I started that compost pile we were talking about. I don't want it to become too acidic, but our ground is covered in pine needles. What's a girl to do? It is safe to put charcoal ashes in there, isn't it?

I'm not sure which plants these are, and I don't have time to go through all of my tags and pictures since I have to be at work in less than an hour, but what remarkable progress the lovely plants are making!

My copper bugs have happily settled into their new homes as well.

Oh, I just noticed that this is my 100th post too. So much to celebrate around here today. I wish I didn't own so much black clothing, I could really use a nice, cheerful outfit to wear today. I'm feeling SO happy!

Thank you for stopping by. Please leave me a message and a backlink. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Cindy

I love your bug. Did you make it? Too cute(-: I love birds too and I love to see the different nests they create. Its so fun to bird watch. Right now I have been enjoying the hummingbirds. They arrived and were starving. I went through a lot of food lately!!! Congrats on your 100th post!!!! Keep up the posting!!!

Ellen- I know! It's such a weird year around here, just CRAZY. I'm glad my plants are growing so well though. I hope they survive the 6 inches of snow we're supposed to get next week.

I was in a black mood for a few years so that's all I really bought. I guess depression really affects you much more deeply than you'd care to think about! It finally occured to me today that my wardrobe is incredibly boring. If you pulled any outfit out of my closet I can bet that most of them contain black, white, or pink. Too back I don't have the money to go out and buy lots of nice, new, colorful stuff. Maybe after my old house sells.... Hmm, I think I've got some fabric and patterns laying around. I wonder how I'd do at sewing my own clothes.

Cindee- No, but I am seriously thinking about making some with the kids. I found them for a spectacular bargain. Birds are interesting to watch, I don't know the nests and nesting habits but I can identify many by sight and a few by sound too. It's always a work in progress though.

cinj, I am excited that the awful white stuff is gone and you are having spring growth. Are you going to grow rhodos and heaths on the pinestraw?

The shirt/dress you are wearing is not all black! Looks like it has flowers on it so all can't be that bad! Congrats on your 100th post. That is a lot.

Hey! I should be in bed. But I had to see what you were up to. I see that some of your snow has melted. Thank goodness. I don't see any mold either. I planted a bunch of stuff up this afternoon. Let me go see what else you been up too. I like your copper bugs. I got lots of bunnies but no bugs.

Hey Cindy! Congrats on starting your new compost pile! Maybe the addition of lime? I don't know, I'm no scientist. heehee
Glad you're feeling good. New seasons breathe new life, huh? -Jen :)

Hey all thanks. I think the meds are finally doing their thing. (Of course the birds coming back and the snow disappearing really couldn't have hurt matters any either.

I'm starting to feel like my old self again. Boy have I been busy. Right before I left for work yesterday I got my flower shipment. It's supposed to rain all weekend starting this afternoon so I worked like a fool to get it done. Boy, is my back sore! I didn't even get a chance to get my shade garden in either. There is WAY too much work to do and it's already sprinkling. At least living in sand I can run out there if it's been a couple of hours after a rain and get more work done. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Gail- Tell me about it! Cheesehead is claiming we're supposed to get 6 inches of snow this weekend. I sure hope not. I'd prefer rain please! I don't remember what I planted, I don't think I planted a rhododendron there since it's a smaller space but I was a bit out of it last year....

Melanie- I know!!!! I've killed every rose I've ever planted after the first year, this is a major feat for me!

Tina- True enough. It's black, pink, white, and green. Maybe I'll have to dig out my wardrobe one of these days to show you what I mean though.

Anna- Did you get to bed yet? I wanted to plant yesterday too, but I took the job a little over an hour before my plants arrived. Oh well, I got paid to spend most of the day outside in the sunshine! I managed to rake most of the mold out of the grass, I need to finish but it looks pretty good.

Jen- I have two bags of lime laying around. I'll have to figure out how much to put on and how often. It's left over from when we did our front yard.

Good to see signs of life in your yard...yeh, no more snow! (Hoping you don't get any more.)

I wouldn't worry too much about wearing black...I do, a lot, just because I like it and it goes with everything---simplifies my wardrobe/dressing and I'm into "simple". I have plenty of color else where in my life (like in my garden), as most likely, do you.

Have a great weekend!

Your rose should be fine, I see proof of life! :) In the fall I pile lots of leaves around them, I always wait to trim them back until the spring, never in the fall in our country. Your bug looks perfect! :)
