Wacked out weather!

I got all of my new plants in the ground yesterday. The rain held off until I got all of my shade plants planted. It's been raining ever since, mostly a gentle rain. The trees are really starting to bud nicely. Today we are having thunderstorms and we're getting quarter sized hail. Guess what the weather is supposed to do tomorrow?

Yup, that's right. SNOW! I hope it stays warmer than that, I don't want my new babies getting damaged. Above 32 degrees would be much preferred.... It's suppsed to get to around 28, so it's not like I'm asking for a big swing or anything.

Thank you for stopping by. Please leave me a message and a backlink. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Cinj, can you cover them? I'll probably be covering some of my my new stuff, and some of the more delicate things like astilbes and Lime Rickey heucheras at least once the next few nights. Even if the cold doesn't kill anything, frostbitten leaves are no fun.

I use old sheets, double them if necessary - works like a charm, provides enough insulation to protect plants from a light freeze or frost. I just weight them down with rocks or patio chair legs, depending on what area I'm covering. It's well worth the extra trouble, helps me sleep better some nights!

Nurseries use frost blankets. I find a couple of old sheets work just as well. They're just a bit heavier than frost blankets, but as long as I place and remove them carefully, they work just fine.

As I sit here in the darkness I can tell the ground is white, the temp is 32, night one of many more to come this week...sigh...I think May 15th may have to be extended this year as the last frost date the way things are going. I wonder what this means for our summer weather. Will we skip over spring right into summer. Perhaps I should stop thinking, it's giving me a headache! LOL!

If the ground is warm the new babies should be fine. Sometimes the snow acts as a blanket. One year I planted about 100 impatiens I had started from seed, went on vacation to Florida and heard on the weather channel it was snowing in Tennessee! Can you say STRESS and a little OCD worrying about my stupid plants while on a family vacation? Bottomline, plants were fine and vacation was good though it would have been better had I not worried. Lesson learned. Your plants and you will be ok.

cinj,

I use the old sheets that I buy at the Salvation army...we are famous for draping our plants here in the south...we get that warm weather and then pop, it's freezing. Our weather will be chilly this weekend, hopefully no freezes, but a few annuals I put out don't like it below 40's! SIGH. Good luck and drape your babies with sheets!

Our plants are mostly too small to even poke above the ground yet, I bought bulbs and/or roots. The phlox may be a bit of a problem as well as the rose, but I think the dirt and mulch will keep the rest of them warm enough. I don't often have to cover plants here. The perrenials are pretty hardy and I don't bother getting annuals until after Mother's Day. Well, except this year because I wanted to put them on the snow.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why I loose my roses....

The weather...we got 8.5" and they're talking 24F tonight. Glad "they" are talking thaw-out next week. We have been a little further ahead than where you are I think. Now I have to wait to see if the little peas are indeed hardy. Well that's Spring...here...and there.

Cinj, I am looking at your blog using Internet Explorer and your sidebar has dropped below the posts. I checked it with Fire Fox and it looks alright on that browser. I looked to see if I could figure out why, but I don't see the problem. Sometimes there is a photo or image that is too wide for the main column. I know that IE doesn't provide as much space between it and the sidebar (or something like that). Thought I would mention it in case you want to know. Are you familiar with the Blogger Help Group? I think they are difficult to access and find the place to post a help question. If you need help to do that, let me know.
OR - maybe someone coming along after me will know how to fix it. You may need to add some space cushion between the two columns. One of those helpers could probably look at it and tell you what is wrong. OR - you may want to just leave it that way :)

Barbee- Really? That's weird. I'm not so techy so I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing it. I've used help before with limited success.

Chirs- 8.5 inches? UGH! That's WAY too much snow for this time of year. I hope it melts quickly for you. We just got a skiff, but it's 20f right now. Poor plants. I used Cheesehead's car washing towel collection. It wasn't big enough to cover everything so I'm hoping the plants are all okay. I guess we'll find out in a few days when it warms up again.

I don't feel good---and hearing about your cold weather reminds me of all the work I got to do tomorrow. It's finally warm here and I'm literally so busy I'm getting dehydrated every day at work. I couldn't keep the store stocked on Friday but a month ago I was hauling plants in and out cause of the cold. So I feel for ya. I hope you don't lose those roses.

Poor Anna! I'm sure you're just swamped there with people trying to buy their flowers. I have a ton of work to do too, mostly raking at this point. UGH! I hope you start feeling better.

So far my roses are doing well. It has stayed 30 and under so I've uncovered them for just a few minutes to get a small amount of sun, but I don't want the prro things to freeze. You wouldn't believe all of the growth I've seen in the last day from the rose I planted last year!
