It is SO cold here today that school was cancelled. Take a look at our thermometer.
Once you factor in the wind chills it feels like it's between 30 and 45 below zero F. Needless to say, I am NOT going outside to get pictures for you this time. On the 15th of each month, Carol from May Dreams Gardens hosts Garden blogger's bloom day. This time of year is hard for us cold climate gardeners to come up with anything to post about. I'll show you why.
It's supposed to remain this cold until noon on Friday so the kids are hoping for another day off from school.
Okay, apparently none of my pictures of the thermometer turned out very well. In case you can't see it the actual temperature reads -20.
As you can see from this view out the front living room window, my gardens are covered with a thick blanket of snow. I sure am grateful for all of that snow on a day like today. If they didn't have the insulation of the snow I'd hate to think of what might happen to the plants!
You'd think I lived in an old home with frost like that on the windows. I'm not exactly sure why they're like that. I suppose part of the reason is the cold outside, but it's crazy. I replaced the windows in my old house because they were like that but I'm not making that mistake again. It was like flushing money down the drain when I went to sell it.
This window had the blind closed all night, so I can understand the ice buildup around the edges. Do you see it? Usually keeping the blinds closed leads to condensation, but it's so cold outside that the condensation is freezing. It seems like the furnace is almost running constantly at these temperatures.
What will I do until spring? Dream of warmer days, plan future gardens, research plants to grow for the family, look up organic ways to keep our gardens pest free, and cuddle up under a nice thick pile of blankets with books or plant and seed catalogs.
Thank you for stopping by. Please leave me a message. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Stay warm Cinj, it looks brrr cold there!
Ahhh, Winter. We just have to hang in there Cindy, just daydream of warm days when we will be complaining about the heat :)
Lona
Jack Frost did a lovely project on your windows. My childhood home used to do that and I loved looking at them.
Hi Cinj, I can only try to imagine that kind of cold, it is not pleasant to even think about. I am glad your kids don't have to go to school in it either, it could be too dangerous, so they say on TV. Don't you love chanting kids? I do, you will always remember this day, especially since you have the blog post to remind you too. That snow cover is a wonderful thing for the plants, we are going to single digits with a wind chill well below zero tonight and the plants have no covering at all, other than the leaves I left in place, thank goodness for that. Stay warm and safe!
Frances
That's A LOT OF FROST! BRRRRRR! Makes me think it is not so cold down here at a mere 20 degrees.
Brrr is right! We are -9 and I thought that was cold! No school called off here yet. Too funny what kid will do in celebration of school being cancelled. Don't they know it is to be made up in June?
Yikes, and I thought it was cold here.
Racquel- We aren't stepping foot outside until it's warmer. I feel bad for Cheesehead who has to go to work, all this cold weather doesn't bring out many customers.
Lona- LOL. That's for sure. I guess we've got to have something to complain about. Good thing I made a bunch of fleece blankets for the family.
Barbee- I picked my favorite one, we have a few that are frosted. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if this were an older home. Oh well, at least it gives us something other than snow to look at.
Frances- It's not great to even imagine the cold, is it? The kids give so many fun memories to record. I wonder if they'll stumble across this stuff years from now when I'm long gone and they have kids of their own.
I sure hope your plants stay safe in all of this cold. I suppose having snow does have it's advantages at times!
Tina- Well, I suppose it's cold to you. 20 degrees seems pretty cold to me after summer, but once we've plunged headlong through the cold winter 20 feels like heaven up here. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
Dawn- There are usually a few extra days above the minimum needed built in for snow days. They're usually pretty lucky not having to make up days off either. I guess we have to wait and see if they are as lucky this year.
Debbi- You have no idea. I think we'll all do the same thing and stay out of the cold as much as possible.
Dear Cinj,
I just can't imagine the cold! I know that this is my refrain...but the kind of cold you all are experiencing is incredible...gail
I can see the themother when I enlarge the pic. That is cold and the snow and frost looks cold also! I told you that you would have something to chat about on GBBD. :) The frost looks like beautiful white flowers!
Stay Warm!!!
Oh so very, very cold, here, too. Hang in there, spring is coming. I think. I hope!
Stay warm and keep dreaming of sunny days to come. I had to laugh at the couch pic. It looks just like my usual layout around this time of year! Thanks for stopping by Garden Muse.
